The Kent State Golden Flashes football program was established in 1916 as a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The team played its first game on October 14, 1916, against Mount Union College, losing 20-0. Kent State\’s first head coach was H.C. \”Doc\” Carlson, who led the team for two seasons. In 1919, Karl E. Davis took over as head coach and led the Golden Flashes to their first winning season in 1921. Davis coached Kent State for 14 seasons, compiling a record of 64-47-12.
In 1935, Trevor J. Rees became head coach and led the Golden Flashes to their first Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship in 1941.
